To show you the impact of China's massive number of Android users/devices, We are going to show you some statistics from one of our app, called LANmic in this article.

Only listed on Google Play Market after a month (Before)

LANmic is a free app supported by advertising and was first released on Google Play market at 5th March 2014, which was just a month ago. As of 5th April 2014, on the Googe Play developer console, it shows there is 169 total installs by users with 62 current installs. In the top 4 countries, 24 (14.20%) installs of comes from United States, 14 (8.28%) installs comes from Taiwan, 13 installs (7.69%) comes from Brazil and 13 (7.69%) installs comes from China

If we look at LANmic via Flurry which tracks all users and app installs regardless of the download source, the marketshare of the different countries is completely different. Flurry reports a total of 425 unique users with 148 active users. If we look at the new users map across all time, we can see 286 (67.3%) installs from Asia, out of which 252 (59.3% of total) installs comes from China.

When we first noticed this abnormality, we are shocked by the number of users, i.e. the percentage share of users who come from China. Until today, we had not make any attempts to market or even publish this application in China. The only place we had officially release this application was on Google Play store, where the percentage share of China users is only 7.69%!! At first, we did not believe this data, so we cross-reference it with the number of add request/impressions from our admob account as well. Needless to say, admob's data matches the result reported by Flurry, indicating that this is no mistake. This data is real!!

What happened? Where does these China users comes from if they did not download it from Google Play store?

We investigated and we were able to find LANmic listed on two China app stores, namely Baidu and apk.91.com. On baidu, there is a direct link where one is able to download the apk directly to your computer or through Baidu mobile helper app. On apk.91.com, there is no download link at all and it seems to be merely an index of Google Play store.

So, it is safe to assume that these China users had acquired LANmic solely from Baidu app store. If you look at our article on the marketshare of these China app stores, you can see that Baidu app store only accounts for around 7.80% of China's app store marketshare, yet it somehow end up contributing to ~60% of our total installs. What do you think might happen if we officially publish LANmic to China's top app stores, making LANmic accessible to most Android users?

Why these app stores indexed or include our app?

Without realizing its potential impact, when we release LANmic, we have actually included simplified and traditional chinese translation inside the app strings as well as in our Google Play Store market description. We did this in the hope that this will increase the number of users who might find this application useful. However, we would have never imagined that China users would end up accounting for more than half of our users......

This is the last update before we submit LANmic to China's app stores. 

As of 3th May 2014, on the Googe Play developer console, it shows there is 241 total installs by users with 73 current installs. In the top 4 countries, 37 (15.35%) installs of comes from United States, 21 (8.71%) installs comes from China18 (7.47%) installs comes from Taiwan and 14 installs (5.81%) comes from Brazil.

If we look at LANmic via Flurry which tracks all users and app installs regardless of the download source, the marketshare of the different countries is completely different. Flurry reports a total of 805 unique users with 121 active users. If we look at the new users map across all time, we can see 614 (76.27%) installs from Asia, out of which 564 (70.06% of total) installs comes from China.
